Choosing a Rug
When
selecting a room size rug, first measure the entire space. Leave a border of floor showing that is 2' - 3' wide around the room. This will make the room appear larger and complement the look of the room. The nature of the room and furniture placement will have a lot to do with the size of the rug you select. A rough drawing of the room, with dimensions and furniture placement will help you select the right size rug. Conlins Furniture has a room planner that lets you plan your room by placing furniture and accessories in a replica of your living space. You can then print off a copy of your room arrangement.

Dinning Room and Breakfast Room

When selecting a rug for a dining room, you need to measure the length and width of your table. First, start by placing all the table leafs in the table. Next, measure the length and width of the table. Add an additional 1'6'' to allow room for the chairs. You do not want the chairs to fall off of the rug when you are sitting down and getting up. Finally, measure the size of the room. Some rooms can accommodate rugs that are much larger than what is needed for the table. This allows for more flexibility when selecting rugs.

Living or Family Room
Most people pick one large rug to compliment their living room. Alternatively, you can separate the room into individual spaces by picking a few smaller rugs to fill the space. This can be a rug between too chairs to make a place to talk, a rug under a chair, a lamp, and an end table to make a comfy reading space, a rug under a coffee table, a rug in front of a fireplace to make the room feel more cozy, or a rug in front of a sofa.

With a room size rug furniture placement is an important consideration. There are three common ways to place the furniture:

1) Have the entire peace of furniture on the rug
2) Have just the front legs of the furniture on the rug
3) Place the furniture around the rug

There is not a right or wrong way to place the furniture. Smaller rooms with small rugs will give less flexibility, while large rooms with large rugs will provide the most choices when placing the furniture.

Bedroom
When selecting a rug for a bedroom, you want the rug to be large enough that you can take a step or tow when you get out of bed. You can either use a room size rugs or use many rugs around the beds. If you have one bed that is centered in the room, you can have one room size rug or a rug at the foot of the bed and on each side of the bed. If you have two beds in the room, then a rug between the beds is nice.

Below are some recommendations of rug sizes based on a particular room size.
